St Vincent De Paul’s Winter Appeal

By | Community, News | No Comments

Dear St Brigid’s Community,

Our Social Justice campaign for this term is focused on the St Vincent De Paul’s Winter Appeal. We are asking for students to Bring: blankets, tracksuits (old), jackets, old sleeping bags, and/or Woolworths essential gifts cards that can be spent on groceries.

We will be having an inter-House competition to see who is the House with the most Compassionate Heart. However, the appeal is not for our own benefit, but to help those at St Vincent De Paul’s, who do an amazing job helping those in true need in our community.

Please watch the following video to have a deeper appreciation for the efforts of St Vincent De Paul: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HNAKa-ZGmMQ

Once again, I thank you all for your caring and kinds hearts and your contributions to our community.

SPECIAL REPORT: Smokeless Tobacco Products

By | News, Wellbeing | No Comments

The evolving nicotine landscape requires parents and caregivers to stay informed to protect young people from these emerging threats. Snus and nicotine pouches are gaining popularity among young people as smokeless tobacco (SLT) products. Both products are discreetly placed under the upper lip, allowing nicotine absorption through the gums.

Health authorities are urging proactive measures to curb this growing trend and calling on regulators to implement controls before these products become as widespread as vapes. The high nicotine levels in these products pose serious health risks, including nicotine addiction, cardiovascular disease, gum disease, tooth decay, and even nicotine poisoning. Researchers highlight the detrimental effects of nicotine on developing brains, linking its use to depression, anxiety, ADHD symptoms, and an increased risk of addiction to other drugs.

The marketing of snus and nicotine pouches targets young audiences through social media influencers, raising concerns about their increasing popularity among school students. And like vapes, they come in various flavours and strengths, with unregulated nicotine levels leading to inconsistent and misleading labelling.  It is clear that SLT products contain not only nicotine, but also other chemicals with unknown long-term effects.

This Special Report will help you become aware of the potential risks of smokeless tobacco products and guide you in age-appropriate discussions with your child.

Another incredible day of rugby league for our under 15 boys team! Mr Philpot’s supervision and coaching undoubtedly contributed to the team’s success, along with the effective communication between players and coach. Competing in two games against other schools on the central coast added a thrilling and diverse element to their experience.

Congratulations to Finn S on earning player of the day, Finn’s consistent performance throughout the day made a significant impact.

It’s heartwarming to receive support from our parents, as their encouragement truly has a significant difference.

A special thank you to Alexah K for joining us to assist and support the team alongside Mr. Philpot. Her valuable knowledge and experience were a fantastic asset during the event.

Respect for Ourselves and Others

By | News | No Comments

Our core purpose here at St Brigid’s is teaching and learning. As a Catholic College, we lead this core purpose through the guise of a Religious, Catholic, perspective. When we learn, we gain understanding, and through understanding we gain respect for the subject.  In teaching terms, we call that respect, passion. Passion means that one wants to be involved, wants to gain deeper knowledge, and understands the value in what is happening in that spear of knowledge.

Here at St Brigid’s, we want that passion to go well beyond the boundaries of the subjects that students study. We want them to enter into our grounds with a passion for being part of our culture. But passion is expressed through actions. We have many ways that we ask our students to express this passion. We want them to be part of our community. We want our students to have pride in who we are and who the are as individuals. But all that starts with the little things. Our passion comes out in the way we wear our uniform, the way we speak to our teachers, the way we behave in our classrooms and the way we engage with our classwork.

Parents and students talk about merits and demerits. They talk about rewards and punishments. I look at it differently. I look at it in regards to is there passion developing or is there a decreasing passion towards the college? I ask parents to look at their child’s Compass entries and either congratulate their child on their passion for their learning (which is developing their future prospects), or to question their child around maybe why there appears to be a bit of a decrease in passion towards their college and their learning.

National Reconciliation Week

By | News | No Comments

This week is National Reconciliation Week (NRW).  It is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

The theme for 2024, Now More Than Ever, is a reminder to all of us that no matter what, the fight for justice and the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people will —and must —continue.

As part of Reconciliation Week, our students got to enjoy playing various  games, Aboriginal painting and drawing using Aboriginal symbols.

St Brigid’s Angels Trivia night

By | News | No Comments

St Brigid’s Angels hosted a spectacular trivia evening yesterday. The theme of the night was ‘Women Empowerment,’ which was brought to the forefront by amazing guest speaker Angela Skellie from the rural fire service.

With over 70 people in attendance, making 10 teams, it was a riveting competition. Everyone was vying for the first-place title and the all-important box of Daily Dough Co donuts.

First place was decided by an ‘edge of your seat’ tie break and it’s not surprising that a team of teachers took out the win ‘Luke and the Holy Quizzie Hisies’ while 2nd place went to ‘Gone with the Win’ which was one of our St Brigid’s families. And last but not least, 3rd place went to ‘Crusty Cherubs’ led by Mrs Foo, which was a Yr12 and teacher combo team.

All in all, it was a memorable evening with lots of laughs. We hope to host many more Angels events in the future, and a big thank you to everyone who helped make it possible!

Model United Nations Assembly

By | News | No Comments

On Thursday, 3 of our Year 10 students participated in the Model United Nations Assembly through the Terrigal Rotary Club. MUNA is an educational simulation where students role-play as delegates to the United Nations and simulate UN committees. The primary goal of MUNA is to educate participants about current events, topics in international relations, diplomacy, and the United Nations agenda.

Our students represented the United Kingdom at MUNA this year.

Ruby represented the interests of the United Kingdom in relation to a resolution regarding the use of sport as a strategy to reduce youth crime rates. Her comments on this issue were well considered and insightful, demonstrating excellent research on the topic. She spoke with confidence and enthusiasm. Brock represented the interests of the United Kingdom in relation to a resolution regarding weapons in space.

Brock spoke wonderfully when exploring a complex area of international law and demonstrated a strong understanding of the relevant issues.

Angus represented the interests of the United Kingdom in relation to a resolution regarding granting independence to non-self-governing territories. This was an extremely complex and sensitive topic to speak on from the perspective of the UK, but Angus did so with nuance and great insight into the relevant history and current contemporary issues. Angus volunteered to speak a second time to respond to criticism the UK received on this topic and was complemented by the judges for doing so.

Our students placed 2nd overall and also won the Best Country Costume award. Congratulations to Ruby, Brock and Angus on these prestigious awards.
