Road Safety

By | Community, News | No Comments

Dear St Brigid’s Community,

This is an important reminder that road safety is a shared responsibility. Please discuss this notice with your family.
To increase the safety on Carters Road, we have been advised that the Traffic Police may increase their presence during peak times to enforce adherence to the road rules outside all schools on Carters Road, including no-parking zones.

How can you help?
As the Central Coast’s population increases, schools on Carters Road are experiencing congestion during the peak morning and afternoon periods. This is placing pressure on the surrounding road environments and our neighbours.

Specific to St Brigid’s, we ask parents/carers and families to consider the following:

  1. Have children walk to College or walk from a ‘drop off point’ outside of Carters Road.
  2. Drop off/pick up in designated areas as quickly as possible, while adhering to the 40km/ph speed limit. (Note: The grassed strip across from the College gates is a NO PARKING zone).
  3. Carpool for drop off/pick up where appropriate.
  4. Use pedestrian crossings at all times when moving to the opposite side of Carters Road.

Staff Car Park
All parents/carers are reminded that the Staff Carpark (third gate) is restricted to staff/contractors and deliveries. Families should not be using this space for drop off/pick-ups due to limited space and safety reasons.

Please find attached information provided by the Central Coast Council.

Thank you for your support.

HELP WANTED! – Year 11 Construction Work Placements Request

By | News | No Comments

Our Year 11 Students in VET Construction (pathways) need to connect with Trades in the profession and complete a week (35hrs) of work placement to experience realistic and contextual work as part of their course. The dates we have been allocated are Term 2 week 6 (June 3-7) and we have 12 students currently in the course.

We are looking for local businesses who are willing to take on a student for a week (or how long 35 hours is in working situations) but ideally, they will be exposed to the Construction industry. Our students are fully insured by the Catholic Church Insurance, and we can supply you with the documentation. Most students are still 16 and may be able to travel to you locally, however they will be covered by our travel insurance in vehicles to and from work sites.

We are seeking anyone in the Construction trades and hold the qualification, and able to take on a student for a week. It can be done outside these dates; it can be later in the year (it may even potentially be in the holidays). Could you please forward your details to the Teacher – Mr Mark Peterson mark.peterson@dbb.catholic.edu.au

PLEASE Note – students aren’t allowed to work at heights above 1.9m, confined spaces etc.

The following are the preferred trades.

Construction/Carpentry/
Cabinet maker/Joinery

Concreting
Landscaping Construction

Bricklayer
Tiler
Roof Plumber

Also applicable – Plumbing and potentially Electrical students in certain circumstances

Thank you.

SPECIAL REPORT: Trauma Recovery

By | News, Wellbeing | No Comments

Trauma in children significantly disturbs their sense of safety and normalcy, leading to substantial emotional and behavioural changes. Such disturbances often result from exposure to traumatic events, which may be exacerbated by continuous media coverage. This exposure can trigger stress, anxiety, and trauma, with varying recovery timelines due to the unpredictable nature of trauma’s impact. Observing young people grappling with these effects can be highly distressing for parents and caregivers.

It’s important to establish a nurturing environment to help restore a child’s sense of security to help promote resilience. Active involvement in their recovery is essential, as is recognising the unique, personalised needs of each child in responding to trauma. Depending on their age, children may present with different symptoms, such as regressive behaviours in younger ones or withdrawal and agitation in older children and teens. It is important to monitor and manage the type of information children may access to reduce their emotional distress.

The brain stores traumatic events as powerful emotional memories, influencing behaviour through mechanisms beyond a child’s conscious awareness. By providing young people with support and equipping them with coping mechanisms to handle uncertainty, parents and carers can greatly enhance a child’s capacity to recover and build long-term emotional resilience.

This Special Report will help you identify a child experiencing trauma and how you can support them to overcome it.

Well done to our college Sailors; Samuel D of Year 9, Issac A of Year 10 and Lucy L and Emily H of Year 12! They participated in the NSW CHS Secondary Schools Sailing Championships during the first week of the holidays. It was an event to remember!

Sam and Emily’s performance on the Hobie 18 was simply impressive, winning all five races and securing the top spot in both their class and the multi-hulls division.

Isaac and Lucy showcased their sailing skills as well, with Isaac finishing 4th in the ILCA 6 class and Lucy securing 5th place.

We are thrilled to announce that St Brigid’s Catholic College took home the 1st place in the CHS Sailing School Team category. A fantastic result!

A special shoutout to Lucy and Emily for their remarkable six-year journey with St Brigid’s in CHS Sailing, culminating in such a triumphant event! Your dedication and hard work have paid off! We hope you keeping sailing towards success!
