The eSports team in Brisbane

By | News, Sport | No Comments

Last weekend, the eSports team flew to Brisbane to participate in the XP High School League’s Queensland Cup for Rocket League.

They played live in front of audiences at the Ekka, placing third in their group stage and narrowly missing out on a spot in the Finals.

Thank you, Mr Car, for taking the team interstate and well done to the team for representing the College and NSW in this prestigious event.

Boys Netball

By | News, Sport | No Comments

Last week we entered a Year 9 and Year 10 Boys Netball team in the Newcastle Schools Cup competition.  This was our first time entering this competition.

The boys all played extremely well in every game, with a few wins had between both teams.  It was great to see the boys really enthused and keen to get in and have a go, in a sport they had not played, other than in PE.  Some basketball skills came into play at times and sometimes these skills paid off.

Thank you, Miss Hill, for training and taking the boys to this event. To our student umpires and assistant coaches, a big thank you for the time you put in with the boys and encouragement you gave them on the day.

It really was a great day for all, and something new and exciting to participate in. The boys all enjoyed themselves and encouraged each other throughout the day. We look forward to the next competition for boys netball.

Stage 5 and 6 Agriculture

By | News | No Comments

Earlier this term, students from Stage 5 and 6 Agriculture had the opportunity to speak with Angus Campbell from BE Campbell about the pork industry in Australia. Angus gave the students insights into how the company has grown over the past 50 years, the impacts of consumer preferences on the industry and his career journey. The event deepened student understanding of value-adding in agriculture and the many pathways and opportunities available in the pork production industry.

We thank Angus and BE Campbell for their time on the day and look forward to sampling some pork products in future lessons.

Student Helpers – Netball

By | News, Sport | No Comments

Once again, some of our students have represented the College by helping our local primary schools at recent netball gala days at Newcastle and Gosford.

The girls umpired games and even coached teams on the day.

It’s always a pleasure to help out St Brendan’s and St Mary’s and our students do it with such pride and enthusiasm.  I know our primary schools really appreciate the help and support from our student helpers, and as a result, continue to ask us back to help at events like this.

Our relationship with St Brendan’s and St Mary is very important to us at the College and we believe in growing as a community together.

Well done girls!

Compassion Cup

By | Community, News | No Comments

Next Wednesday, August 16th, our new whole-school College event “Compassion Cup” will take place on the bottom oval. This event is a great opportunity for students to showcase their sporting talent and for their peers to demonstrate strong House spirit by cheering on their respective teams.

In conjunction with the tournament, there will be a BBQ fundraiser organised to support our Year 12 students. The fundraiser will also include soft drinks and lollies which are all available to be purchased on the day.

Students are encouraged to wear appropriate MUFTI clothing on the day that represents the colour of their House. A gold coin donation for MUFTI will be set up on the front gate and this will also go back to our Year 12’s.

The timing of the event will be strict. All students must be on the bottom oval by 12:55pm ready for the first game to begin at 1pm. The event will finish at 2:30pm which means you will not have an assembly that afternoon. Period 4 will be cut 5 minutes short to allow you to get to the oval promptly.

The oz-tag tournament will take place on the bottom oval and all spectators will be seated on the edge of the field. I encourage students to bring a picnic blanket to sit on around the oval. All spectators are encouraged to cheer their team on to build up the atmosphere of the day.

Good luck to all four Houses on the day and may the best oz-tag team win!

Benefits of Being a Community – Assistant Principal

By | Community, News | No Comments

This week I spoke to our students on assembly about the benefits of being part of a community.  I have a number of goals that I want St Brigid’s Catholic College to deliver to our children.  One of those goals is to give them a genuine sense of community, belonging to something bigger than themselves.  I want our students to feel connected to the College, to be proud to say they are a St Brigid’s student, I want them to have pride in their school and I want them to have a sense that they are important as individuals and they play an important role in supporting others and shaping the community we want to be.  I have the same goals for our past students, our parents and carers and all those that have any connection to the College.

Being part of a community offers numerous benefits that contribute to our overall well-being and sense of belonging.  Here are some key benefits of being part of our community at St Brigid’s:

Sense of Belonging: Being part of our community gives us a sense of belonging and connection to others.  It provides a space where we can share personal experiences, relate to others, and feel accepted.  This sense of belonging helps us develop a stronger sense of personal and collective identity.

Support and Emotional Health: St Brigid’s provides social connections, friendship, and practical and emotional support.  It offers a support network of peers who can provide advice, commiseration, and encouragement.  Being part of our community can help combat feelings of isolation and loneliness.

Personal Growth and Inspiration: Engaging with like-minded individuals in a community can inspire personal growth and motivation.  As a College we have a common goal or purpose, which can encourage individuals to set and achieve their own goals.  Being part of the St Brigid’s community provides opportunities for learning, encouragement, and inspiration.

Improved Well-being: Being part of our community can have a positive impact on our overall well-being.  It can improve our mental and emotional health, as well as our physical health.  At St Brigid’s we have a space for individuals to share humour, vent frustrations, and celebrate achievements.  We offer a sense of pride and a feeling of being part of something greater than ourselves.

Diversity and Knowledge: Our community is diverse and contains a variety of opinions, ideas, and knowledge that we may not encounter alone.  Being part of a community exposes us to different perspectives and allows for personal growth through learning from others.

In summary, being part of the St Brigid’s community offers a sense of belonging, support, personal growth, improved well-being, and exposure to diverse perspectives.  It provides a space where individuals can connect, share experiences, and contribute to something greater than themselves.  I encourage everyone associated with St Brigid’s Catholic College, both past and present to truly embrace this community and share in all that it has to offer.

Postcards from St Brigid’s Pilgrims

“We started our pilgrimage this morning with a visit to the Vatican Museums. Wandered the spectacular chambers leading to the Sistine Chapel to view Michelangelo’s masterpieces, including the magnificent fresco of the Last Judgment. We went through to the awe-inspiring St Peter’s Basilica, the largest church in the world for an informative exploration.

We visited the impressive St Mary Major Basilica and celebrated Mass here. We went to the Holy Stairs brought from Jerusalem to Rome in 326AD by St Helen. On these steps I ascended on my knees. This has been a high light for me to date.

The kids have been amazing and I am so proud of each of them. – Mrs Foo”

Day 10!

“This morning we went to the most visited attraction in Rome – the Colosseum. In 1749, Pope Benedict XIV declared the Colosseum a sacred site, as it was a place where early Christians had been martyred. View also the Circus Maximus and the Roman Forum en route.

Continue along the ancient Appian Way, the oldest road from Roman times to the ancient Catacombs for a memorable guided tour to marvel at these underground burial tunnels for Christians and Hebrews. Here we shall also celebrate Mass. It has been amazing celebrating mass with the bishop every day!

Our Christian Rome pilgrimage culminates this afternoon with a visit of the Basilica of St Paul Outside the Walls as a special tribute to the Church’s greatest evangelist. Also while we were there we had a prayer with the Bishop at the site where a young Aboriginal man is buried. We are saying goodbye to Italy tomorrow ready for Portugal!

Days 11-12

We departed Italy today and flew over the ditch to Portugal.

We landed into a buzzing Lisbon airport full of Pilgrims from all across the globe.

We headed to our hotel where we reunited with Mr Devlin, Sr Josie and Mr Barnett. We entered our amazing hotel, unpacked our bags and went out to explore a bit of the city. We went to a pizza shop, where we met some Pilgrims from France and Slovakia, got takeaway and headed back to our rooms for some well-deserved rest.

Day 12 began with a buffet breakfast in the hotel after which we gathered in the garden with all the Broken Bay pilgrims for a prayer and blessing by Bishop Anthony. We sang the Broken Bay pilgrimage anthem, Magnify, and then we were ready to head off to the whole Australian Pilgrim WYD Gathering. We got onto the subway and headed to the park to gather. There were over 3000 Australian Pilgrims in attendance! We sang, danced and prayed before it was time to head back into the city for dinner and the WYD Opening Mass.

We wrapped up our dinner and walked into the crowded streets of Lisbon filled with flags from all over the world. We found a spot very far from the main alter but the atmosphere and our surroundings were truly like no other. We shared celebration of the Eucharist in Portuguese and listened to the amazing service provided by the Archbishop of Lisbon to over 800,000 Pilgrims! It was a day we will never forget, now we rest and get ready to smash out the remained of WYD week. – Tom M Year 11.

Friday House Challenge

By | News, Sport | No Comments

This week’s house challenge consisted of a game of musical chairs.

There were plenty of laughs, fun and sunshine playing this game that the students really enjoyed.  It was a great way to score points for their house groups.

Kildare won today followed by Terry, Walker and Lakes.
