A SPECIAL REPORT: Mobile Phone Separation Anxiety

By | News, Wellbeing | No Comments

The use of mobile phones and technology in schools has been a highly debated topic internationally, including in Australia. Almost all states and territories in Australia, have implemented full bans on mobile phones during class, recess, and lunch times, while allowing students to carry their phones during travel to and from school.

Critics argue that there is no evidence supporting the effectiveness of such bans, but this is a mischaracterisation. Studies have shown the positive impacts of mobile phone bans in schools. One study conducted in 2016, found that banning mobile phones led to an increase in student performance, with test scores improving by 6.4% of a standard deviation. Similar studies from Spain and Norway also supported these findings.

For parents concerned about mobile phone separation anxiety in their children, it is important to acknowledge it as a real issue and discuss the negative effects of phone addiction, such as sleep problems and mental health issues. Gradually introducing phone-free periods at home, setting clear expectations and boundaries and modelling healthy behaviours can help your child cope. It is also crucial to establish a support network and seek professional help if needed. Implementing mobile phone bans in schools allows for better focus on teaching and learning, minimising distractions and interruptions.

This Special Report will help address mobile phone separation anxiety and provide guidance on supporting your child’s wellbeing during this transition period.

We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this Special Report, and as always, we welcome your feedback.

If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact the school for further information or seek medical or professional help.

National Sorry Day

By | News | No Comments

National Sorry Day is known as a day of healing, it is held on the 26th of May each year.  It is to remember and acknowledge the mistreatment of the countries Indigenous peoples, particularly the forced removal of Indigenous children from their families, known as the stolen generation.

Our students have been working hard to make a sea of hands as part of our recognition of the importance of this day for our Darkinjung and Awabakal community.  Together we move forward, building a better future for generations to come.

Broken Bay Open Basketball

On Monday our Open Basketball teams represented the college at Terrigal, it’s always nice to have games close to home and not travel.  Both teams played really well on the day, at times there were high fives going around and lots of smiles and laughter, it’s safe to say they all had a good day.  Thank you to Mrs Ison and Mr Martindale for coaching these teams.  Our students played throughout the day with great sportsmanship and did us all proud on the courts.

Thank you to Mr Lynch for co convening this event for St Brigid’s.  It’s great to have his support behind basketball and he too got the opportunity to see parts of the games our students played.

We are thrilled to share the incredible success of the ‘Shine’ Youth Ministry Event hosted at St. Peters on Friday!  It was a day filled with inspiration, joy, and powerful discussions centered around the theme, ‘Step into The Light.’

We were privileged to have Father Rob Galea, a well-renowned musician, join us as our special guest. Father Rob’s engaging and heartfelt music resonated deeply with everyone present, igniting a light within each young heart to embrace their unique journey of faith.

The day also showcased outstanding performances by the talented Mackillop High group, who captivated the audience with their incredible talent and passion for drama, creating an atmosphere of worship and reflection.

Shine wasn’t just about performances; it was an opportunity for teenagers to engage in meaningful discussions. Our interactive workshops delved into crucial topics that touch the lives of young people today, exploring issues of identity and the challenges faced on their faith journey.  The insightful conversations sparked new perspectives and helped participants gain a deeper understanding of themselves and their relationship with God.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Father Rob Galea, Mackillop, and all the dedicated volunteers who made this event a resounding success.  Their passion and commitment to empower our youth are truly remarkable!

We also want to express our appreciation to everyone who attended Shine – your enthusiasm and active participation contributed to the vibrant energy and spirit of the day.  You all stepped into the light, embracing the call to live boldly as radiant witnesses of Christ’s love in the world.

Wee Jasper Outdoor Learning Experience 2023

Outdoor Learning Experience

The Wee Jasper Outdoor Learning Experience offers a unique adventure opportunity; an ‘ABC’ combination of Abseiling, Bushwalking / Biking and Caving will provide memories that will last a lifetime. At the end of a long day, an evening campfire provides the focus for relaxation, stories and conversation.

Wee Jasper is a small picturesque valley at the foot of the Brindabella Ranges on the backwaters of Burrinjuck Dam. It is located 54km south-west of Yass. The students will be camping at Billy Grace Reserve on the banks of the Goodradigbee River. The Wiradjuri people are the traditional owner’s of the land. The reserve is managed by the Department of Conservation and Land Management. Limestone karst in the valley provides the ideal geological environment for cave formation.
