Importance of Building Relationships – Schools and Families – Alex Walters

By | News | No Comments

Over the last two weeks we have celebrated our students and our community. On Tuesday we held our Stage 6 CAPA and Design and Technology Showcase and on Friday our Father’s Day breakfast and this week we held the first of our two Parent/Teacher conferences for this Semester. I am grateful that events like these continue to build our partnership between the College and our families. Partnerships between our school and our families are vital for students and their sense of community and their social and emotional wellbeing. This relationship is at the heart of our collective success, and its importance cannot be overstated.

The connection between home and school is a powerful force in a child’s education. This collaboration involves a shared responsibility between all stakeholders who support children’s development and learning. When families and educators work together, we create a supportive environment that fosters learning, growth, and well-being. It is through this partnership that we can best meet the needs of our students, helping them to reach their fullest potential.

Research consistently shows that when families are actively involved in their child’s education, students achieve more, have better attitudes toward learning, and are more motivated to succeed. Furthermore, the research states that this leads to students earning higher grades, attending school more regularly, staying in school longer and are more connected and developing a sense of community connection.

At the heart it, is the combined strength of our shared commitment as a school community, and families to build relationships that support the young people in our lives. We also recognise that a strong school-family relationship is built on trust, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to our students’ success. It is about listening to one another, valuing each other’s perspectives, and working together to overcome any challenges that arise.

Families provide invaluable insights into their children’s strengths, challenges, and unique needs. This knowledge helps us as educators to tailor teaching approaches to better support each student’s growth and success. In turn, educators share their professional expertise, resources, and feedback to help families understand how to best support learning at home. We believe that when families and schools unite with a common purpose, our children thrive.

We value every opportunity we have to invite you in and thank you for your ongoing support and involvement. Your contributions make a profound difference in our students’ lives and allow us as educators to support you as you nurture and raise your children.

This week’s conferences have been, as always, a positive opportunity for us to work with you and your children. For those who are still yet to book we have a face-to-face conference next Wednesday from 2pm. These close on Tuesday Week 8 at 5pm.

SPECIAL REPORT: R U OK? Day

By | News, Wellbeing | No Comments

Understanding the growing challenges related to mental health among young people is an important consideration. Anxiety, depression and self-harm – are all causes for concern. Factors like academic pressure, social media, family dynamics, and societal expectations, are contributing to these issues. It’s therefore crucial for parents and caregivers to take action early, remove the stigma around discussing mental health, and offer accessible support to address these issues and the wellbeing of their children.

R U OK?Day is an initiative that focuses on preventing suicide by encouraging meaningful personal connections and helping informal support networks to help recognise the signs of distress. We urge all families to take part, emphasising the value of genuine human relationships and reminding everyone to ask the important question, “Are you OK?”

Engaging in R U OK?Day activities goes beyond the classroom; it’s a commitment to our students’ overall development. By talking openly about mental health, schools create safe spaces where students feel understood, valued, and supported. As parents and caregivers, you can contribute by fostering open conversations, normalising feelings and breaking down mental health stigmas. Participating in R U OK?Day promotes compassion and shows our dedication to the wellbeing of the entire school community, reaffirming that together, we can truly make a difference.

This Special Report provides guidance on how to talk to your child about mental health and engage in meaningful discussions.

Student Achievement – Lockie

By | News | No Comments

Meet Lockie, a St Brigid’s student in year 11, he is a dedicated fireman who has been serving the community in countless ways! Starting his training at just 15, he became an official fireman by 16 in 2023.

He was named Rookie of the Year 2023-2024 and remains one of the most active members of the Brigade.

Lockie recently attended a medical training day for emergency response with Central Coast Health and continues to train once or twice a week to enhance his skills. He’s involved in community engagement events and even conducted fire safety checks at schools earlier this year.

From motor vehicle accidents and medical calls to house fires and bushfires, Lockie responds to all calls, big or small. He’s worked alongside other emergency services in various situations, including search and rescues, structural fires, and more.

Lockie has also travelled out of the area to assist other brigades, including fighting fires in the 2023 Hunter Valley fires. His commitment to serving the community is truly inspiring!
