Year 12 Smoking Ceremony and Graduation Mass

By | News | No Comments

At the end of last Term we held a smoking ceremony and graduation mass.

The Year 12 smoking ceremony and graduation mass is a profound and memorable event that marks the culmination of students’ high school journey. The smoking ceremony, led by an Indigenous elder, serves as a powerful cultural ritual that cleanses and prepares the students for their transition into adulthood, honouring the land and its traditions.

The graduation mass brought the school community together in a solemn and celebratory service, where students reflected on their achievements, expressed gratitude, and received blessings for their future endeavours. This blend of cultural and spiritual elements creates a unique and meaningful farewell, leaving a lasting impression on our students.

Please enjoy these photos of these special events.

Servant Leadership the desire to help others

By | News | No Comments

Last Friday 13th September was a special occasion for the outgoing student leaders who supported the new leaders with a badging ceremony and liturgy.  The parents were invited to pin the leadership badge on their child that was blessed by Father Tomy.  This ceremony provides an opportunity to acknowledge the importance of Catholic schools in developing the whole person academically, religiously, socially and morally.  This is important not only for elected student leaders but all students.  St. Brigid’s fosters a leadership model in young people that draws its inspiration from the life, teachings, and ministry of Jesus. The leadership program is taught and modelled by Jesus which is centered on service to others. The aim is to encourage personal growth of students as future leaders by developing young men and women as leaders who would act with compassion, wisdom stewardship and courage. St. Brigid’s understands the importance of the dignity of each person and a recognition of students’ potential.

Our mission is to mentor young people to develop and grow within a culture of faith by being a witness to the Gospel message and putting faith into action.  We encourage students to develop a special relationship with Christ and model their leadership efforts on the servant approach preferred by Jesus which is the desire to help others.  Servant leadership begins with wanting to serve first before leading and the school provides the opportunity for all students to be involved and demonstrate leadership skills through a variety of activities.  These activities include Catholic mission, Youth Ministry, House events assisting at mass and assemblies, music, creative arts and sport.  The Catholic view of leadership encourages participants to ‘look beyond’ themselves and minister to the needs of others through service.

The contributions of our Catholic school student leaders and teachers to the life and mission of the Church are examples of God’s presence in our schools. We value their commitment, generosity and service to make Christ the center of everything we see and do, by putting others first which is servant leadership. We pray that the new student leaders are guided and encouraged by these principles.

SPECIAL REPORT: Dealing with Disappointment

By | News, Wellbeing | No Comments

Disappointment is a natural part of life that young people will encounter as they navigate through different experiences. It can result from unmet expectations, setbacks, or shattered dreams. However, learning to manage disappointment is crucial for building resilience and personal growth. Young people have a lot of choice regarding how they hey think and respond to disappointment.

Disappointment can be a tricky emotion to deal with at any age. It’s important to understand that disappointment is a normal emotion and plays a vital role in a young person’s emotional, intellectual, and social development. Instead of trying to shield children from disappointment, we can support them in learning how to cope with it, as it equips them with the skills for future challenges. Helping children develop healthy strategies for managing disappointment will contribute to their long-term happiness and success. It’s like a practice lap on the course to adulthood.
